Oregon is Filming Country: Recent Local Movies

The state of Oregon is historically a very popular location for filming movies. From the Jack Nicholson classics “One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest” and “The Shining,” to cult classics like “Stand by Me” and “The Goonies,” the Beaver state has undoubtedly left its mark on the movie industry. But some movie-goers might be surprised to learn that the on-going love affair between the movies and Oregon does not appear likely to end any time soon. Many more recent movies have been filmed and/or set in the state of Oregon, and the films cover every genre imaginable.Confused? Here ‘s a little help .

In the past 6 years there have been more than 50 feature films made in Oregon, as well as three documentaries and four television series. Among the most well known movies filmed the state was the 2008 filming of the first installment in the very popular “Twilight” series. “Twilight” was filmed in various locations around the state, including Oxbow Park, Carver, St. Helens, and several sites in and around Portland.

Even animated film makers have been known to take advantage of the scenic beauty and temperate climate of Oregon State. The animated feature “Coraline,” starring Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher, was created in 2009 using the metropolitan areas of Portland as its setting.

The 2010 medical drama “Extraordinary Measures,” which starred Brendan Frasier and Harrison Ford, did extensive filming at the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and on the Nike World campus in Beaverton, OR. This was the first time that the Nike Corp. allowed filming to be done on one of their campuses, and the company donated all proceeds to the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

The list of movies filmed in Oregon is extensive, and still growing. Among projects currently in the works is “Gone,” a drama starring Amanda Seyfried, filming in the Portland area during the summer of 2011.
